What to make of the 2 Lions placed on NFI

The Lions announced 2 players on the NFI (non football injury/illness) list today. As a reminder, players can be taking off the NFI list anytime - as soon as the next day.

The NFI functions similarly to PUP, but with these important differences:

The injury was not related to football, or activities/treatments related to getting ready for football. This opens up the possibility that the player was doing something he wasn’t supposed to be doing.

Which brings up the second important difference:

The team does not have to pay the player’s salary while on NFI.

Thus, the NFI means there is the potential for a rift between the team and the player.

Last year, the only Lion on NFI was Josh Paschal due to a back surgery. He ended up not playing the entire season, and has since been released.

It’s important to note that Mahogany was labeled as a “Non-Football Injury” whereas Izien was labeled as a “Non-Football Illness”. Let’s break it down…

Christian Mahogany (Non-Football Injury)

Mahogany was fully present and active at OTA and minicamp last month, so it’s a surprise to see him go on NFI.

This will be the second time in his 3-year career that he’s been on NFI. In 2024, he missed all of camp and the first month of the regular season with infectious mononucleosis complications.

The difference this time is he’s labeled an injury and not an illness… ruling out repeat mono, which would be very unlikely anyway due to immunity.

His previous medical history looks like this:

2025: Left fibula fracture, missed 6 games
2024: Wore right knee brace all season
2022: Right ACL

Since Mahogany is on NFI, the current injury should not be related to any of those previous injuries. Something likely happened after the end of minicamp on June 17.

Christian Izien (Non-Football Illness)

An “illness” is almost always of minimal concern for NFL players as they are young, healthy, and physically fit. Two of the most common possible diagnoses are acute respiratory infection or gastroenteritis (stomach flu). Maybe he got into some of that Taco Bell lettuce.

Expect Izien to come off the NFI list pretty quickly. Although, as seen with Mahogany in 2024, you just never know.
