Lions 2026 UDFA: Luke Altmyer QB
Did the Lions find a future backup for Jared Goff?
The Lions signed multiple undrafted free agents (UDFA) after the 2026 NFL Draft. Letβs start off the medical analysis at the QB position.
Medical concern level ranges from 0 (no concern) to 10 (extreme).
(Ages in parentheses are at start of 2026 season and are factored into the concern level. Injury info and ages based on available public information and are unverified - subject to update. Games played data courtesy of sports-reference.com.)
Luke Altmyer, QB (23) - Illinois
Matt Millerβs #234 overall player.
Medical Concern Level: 1/10
2025: 13/13 games
2024: 13/13 games
2023: 9/12 games. Concussion, missed final 3 games which may have been partially due to coachβs decision - injury video here.
2022: 4 games. Possible shoulder injury, played in the next game and the bowl game.
2021: 5 games
Altmyer had a possible shoulder injury in 2022 which is of course a concern for a QB. Itβs uncertain if the injury was on his throwing side. Either way, there is minimal concern as he played in the next game, and has three years of proof of recovery since.
The concussion in 2023 appears to be isolated and thus is not a major concern. His age is young for a QB as that position can be played deep into the 30βs.
Altmyer got a lot of experience in his five years of college, throwing 660/1036 (64%) for 7924 yards.
The Lions could use a long-term solution at backup QB in case Teddy Bridgewater, age 33 on a 1-year deal, decides to return to high school coaching. Given his undrafted status, Iβd expect Altmyer to safely stash on the practice squad for the entire season unless there are injuries ahead of him. Hopefully in 2027, he will be ready to compete for the backup role.
