The safety group was extremely impressive at the NFL combine, which might be good news for the Lions who are needing some healthy bodies. The following 3 safeties stood out at the combine by having the 3 fastest 40-yard times. However, all have significant surgeries in their past that will need investigation.

Medical concern level ranges from 0 (no concern) to 5 (might be worth the risk if the reward is high) to 10 (take him off your board, Brad).

(Ages in parentheses are at start of 2026 season and are factored into the concern level. Injury info and ages based on available public information and are unverified - subject to update. Games played data courtesy of sports-reference.com.)

Quick summary of medical concern levels

Lorenzo Styles, S (24): shoulder surgery plus recurrent shoulder issues, age - 7/10
Robert Spears-Jennings, S (22): shoulder surgery - 3/10
Treydan Stukes, S (25): ACL, age - 4/10

Lorenzo Styles, S (24) - Ohio State

Projected round 4-7. 4.27 40-yard dash at combine, fastest by safety since 2003.

Concern level 6/10

2025: 12/14 games. Recurrent shoulder dislocations requiring surgery in the spring. Right shoulder injury during season, no missed games. Upper body injury (another shoulder?), missed 2 games. Exited final playoff game with another suspected shoulder injury.
2024: 16/16 games.
2023: 6/13 games
2022: 13/13 games
2021: 13/13 games

Styles is ludicrously fast, but hasn’t been able to outrun a slew of shoulder issues over the past year, even after already having surgery. His older age is also a factor.

The fact that Styles is this athletic and has played so many games in college, yet hasn’t gone to the NFL prior to this, suggests that his play doesn’t match his athleticism. He did not collect a single interception in his career. However, he might go higher than expected because you can’t teach speed.

Robert Spears-Jennings, S (22) - Oklahoma

Projected round 3-5. 4.32 40-yard dash at combine.

Concern level 3/10

2025: 13/13 games. Possible shoulder aggravation while wearing shoulder brace.
2024: 13/13 games
2023: 12/13 games. Shoulder surgery April 2023.
2022: 9/13 games

The details and the residuals of the shoulder injury will need investigation. Players can have long careers after a shoulder injury that require long-term bracing, like Alex Anzalone.

Spears-Jennings finished with 2 INT in his career.

Treydan Stukes, S (25) - Arizona

Projected round 3-5. 4.33 40-yard dash at combine.

Concern level 4/10

2025: 10/13 games. Missed first 2 games of season presumably in ACL recovery. Opted out of bowl.
2024: 4/12 games. ACL tear in October 2024.
2023: 12/13 games
2022: 11/12 games
2021: 12/12 games
2020: 3 games

It’s good to see Stukes with a proven year after his ACL tear. An ACL has minimal to no residuals unless there was associated cartilage damage, which can be gleaned via MRI and surgical report. Age and mileage are concerns for Stukes who has logged 6 years at Arizona.

Stukes finished with 7 INT in his career, 4 in his final season.
