Brian Branch Achilles injury analysis & outlook
Including a review of events leading up to the injury
Brian Branch ruptured his Achilles in Week 14 of the 2025 season. The late-season, long-term injury will very likely impact the 2026 season for this Pro-Bowl level safety.
Let’s start with the injury itself, then review the events leading up to the injury.
THE INJURY
December 4, 2025 (Week 14) - Right Achilles rupture
You can see the calf muscle pop when his Achilles ruptures…
The slight external rotation of his ankle as he is rolled-up on may have added just enough strain to cause the rupture. If so, that is extremely unfortunate, split-second timing.
While a total fluke injury is possible, there is a lot of evidence of earlier compromise that may have culminated in the rupture…
WHAT PRECEDED THE INJURY
September 14 (Week 2) - Right leg contusion
Branch gets kicked in the right leg here just below the knee. Later in the game he also has cramps which is common for him.
October 5 (Week 5) - Another right leg contusion
Branch again gets hit in the right leg here and has a pad placed on the upper, lateral calf area.
October 9 - MRI on foot and/or ankle
After the game, Branch is reported to have a foot MRI (side uncertain)…
Curiously, he was listed on the official injury reports at that time with an ankle and not a foot. How to reconcile this?
A body part that can fit both a foot and ankle description is the Achilles tendon or the Achilles tendon insertion at the back of the heel. A directly relevant example is that Branch’s Achilles rupture was officially designated in-game by the Lions as an “ankle”.
Could this have been an early sign of a slight Achilles injury?
November 16 (Week 11) - Right toe injury
Branch shows up on the injury report after Week 11 with a toe. You can see him walking around while getting right toe therapy in this video…
November 23 (Week 12) - Right toe aggravation and ankle injury
Branch appears to aggravate his right toe in Week 12. We are now at 2 weeks prior to the rupture…
After this game, he is listed with both a toe and ankle on the injury reports.
December 4 (Week 14) - Day of Achilles rupture
Early in the 2nd quarter of the fateful game, there was a suspicious moment with his right foot/ankle.
He was down for a bit after this play and got up limping.
It’s possible that he had a partial tear of his right Achilles at this moment. Later in the game in the 4th quarter, his Achilles ruptured.
ANALYSIS
Branch had many minor injuries to his right leg prior to the Achilles rupture. His Achilles may have already been compromised leading up to the moment of rupture. It’s also possible that the injuries in the preceding weeks to surrounding areas caused extra strain on the calf muscle and Achilles tendon.
The Achilles rupture may have been a culmination of all those antecedent factors coupled with the awkward landing mechanism with external rotation strain of the ankle.
OUTLOOK
A recovery around 10-11 months is the hope, although a long-term injury like this can have a good amount of variation. If he can return in 10 months, then he would be back on the field in October. Starting training camp on PUP (physically unable to perform) list seems likely.
While a return-to-play is almost certain, what’s not certain is how close he will get to a full recovery. What will help Branch is that he is a youthful 24-years-old at the start of the 2026 season.
Let’s look at some player comps which includes 2 Achilles ruptures to recent members of the Lions secondary.
Tracy Walker 2022
Walker’s injury was in Week 3, and he was ready for the start of the next season. However, this Achilles may have ended Walker’s career as he only played 1 more season afterwards.
Jeff Okudah 2021
Okudah ruptured his Achilles in Week 1 and returned for the start of the next season. Amazingly, he looked more athletic and confident than before, as you can see here…
While Okudah has bounced around the NFL since, he is still in the league having played for the Vikings in 2025.
JK Dobbins 2023
A very successful Achilles recovery recently is running back JK Dobbins who was injured in Week 1 of 2023 while with the Ravens. He was ready for the start of the 2024 season when he rushed for 905 yards and finished 2nd in Comeback Player of the Year voting. In 2025, he had rushed for an impressive 772 yards in 10 games before a Lisfranc ended his regular season.
I’m cautiously optimistic that Branch can join the list of successful Achilles recoveries. Wishing the best for Branch in his recovery.
CONTRACT STATUS
Branch has 1 year left on his 4-year rookie deal which means he is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after the 2026 season. He is eligible for an extension this offseason which makes it very interesting to see how the Lions and Branch handle it.

How often do the things leading to the actual injury lead to nothing?
