Lions 2026 Free Agency: Jay Tufele, DT
Can this veteran DT provide backup in the trenches?
The Lions continue to add defensive line help this offseason. This time, it’s via free agency in the way of Jay Tufele who joins recent additions Aidan Keanaaina, Skyler Gill-Howard, and Tyre West at the DT position.
Tufele carries the most medical concern of the group due to a 2025 season-ending foot injury.
Below is the medical report for Jay Tufele. For a full breakdown of all the Lions free agents, visit my Lions 2026 Free Agency Page.
Medical concern level ranges from 0 (no concern) to 10 (extreme).
(Ages in parentheses are at start of 2026 season and are factored into the concern level. Injury info and ages based on available public information and are unverified - subject to update. Games played data courtesy of pro-football-reference.com)
Jay Tufele, DT (27)
Contract: 1 year, up to $1.215M
Medical Concern Level: 7/10
2025: 12 games played. December foot injury ended his season after Week 16.
2024: 13 games
2023: 10 games
2022: 7 games
2021: 4 games. Hand surgery, to IR.
A season-ending foot injury is a significant concern due to the lack of proven game action since. He also has a report of a remote foot injury in high school. The details and relation of these foot injuries is unknown. Recurrent foot injuries are certainly something to watch moving forward.
His hand surgery from 2021 isn’t an issue.
His age is good for a free agent and he’s on just a 1-year deal. In his NFL career, he’s had 21 solo tackles, 3 TFL, 4 QB hits, and 0.5 sacks.
