PRP & Stem Cell Treatment: Hype vs Reality

Analyzing the data behind these therapies

With the status of Kerby Joseph’s knee as maybe the biggest Lions’ injury story of the past year, the topic of PRP and stem cells has risen in relevance. There have been no public reports of Joseph seeking this kind of treatment as of yet, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he has already tried it this 2026 offseason.

I dug into my podcast archives and found the above video clip I recorded in October 2024 where I discussed the data behind PRP and stem cells. Nothing has changed my stance since then.

Why might Kerby Joseph seek this treatment?

The hope is the treatment will help with the symptoms of knee cartilage damage. See my story below for more details on what might be going on with Joseph’s knee…

What is the bottom line for PRP & stem cells?

Unfortunately, the bottom line is that the evidence for PRP & stem cells is weak at best. There may be no effect beyond placebo. Even if there is an effect, the benefit is modest and is nowhere near a magic cure for conditions like cartilage loss, degenerative knee, and arthritis.
